Why we are upgrading Chicago's system
Just as you have to replace the roof on your house or the tires on your car over time,
Peoples Gas is upgrading its natural gas delivery system to ensure safety and reliability.
Our crews are working in neighborhoods from the North side to the South side and areas in
between to maintain and improve natural gas service in all the communities we serve.
Our commitment to safe, reliable service
Peoples Gas has an excellent record of safety,
and this program will help us to maintain that record.
As professionals working for you, safety will remain our number one priority.
Our crews are working to keep you safe by replacing aging cast-iron pipes with durable plastic pipe.
Since 2011, Peoples Gas has installed nearly 1,142 miles of new plastic pipeline. In total, our crews
will replace more than 2,000 miles of natural gas pipes. Plastic pipes are more flexible and better at
withstanding the freezing and thawing cycles of Chicago's weather. With an upgraded delivery system,
there will be fewer interruptions in your natural gas service and fewer repairs.
Our commitment to Chicago communities
Our Safety Modernization Program sustains 1,200 highly skilled, well-paying Illinois jobs.
Our ongoing work in Chicago neighborhoods created jobs and training for more than 460 military
veterans through the Utility Workers Military Assistance Program. We work closely with businesses
owned by minorities, women and veterans, so they can compete for and win contracts with Peoples Gas
to complete necessary upgrades to Chicago's system.
